Become a Master Gardener in Crow Wing County!

If you have an interest in plants and gardening and would enjoy sharing that interest with others, apply to become a University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener volunteer.  Applications were accepted for the Crow Wing County Extension Master Gardener Program until October 1, 2017.

Individuals selected for the program will begin an internship that starts with the Master Gardener core course training in January of 2019.  The course is taught online or in-person at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.  Instructors are University of Minnesota Extension educators and faculty.

Following the course, interns will complete 50 hours of volunteer service in the first year, working with local Master Gardener volunteers on a variety of projects that educate the public about gardening and horticulture.  You might answer plant questions by phone or at an information booth, write a newspaper column, or make a presentation to a community group.

After completing the internship, you become a certified University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener.  To remain certified, Master Gardeners must contribute at least 25 hours of volunteer service annually.

For an application packet and more information, please contact Crow Wing Master Gardeners at 218-454-4769 or

Minnesota Teen Challenge (MNTC) in Brainerd received donation from the University of Minnesota Central Regional Sustainable Development Partnership (CRSDP) for a greenhouse!

Funds in the amount of $15,359 were approved to build a new greenhouse next to the newly established educational garden at the MNTC campus. This horticulture project is a collaboration between MNTC and UMN Extension Crow Wing County Master Gardeners, who will be mentoring MNTC clients and staff from start to finish during this unique, on site educational garden program.

The Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships (RSDPs) give communities in Greater Minnesota access to the University of Minnesota in order to help solve problems and take advantage of new opportunities. The Central RSDP brings together local talent and resources with University of Minnesota knowledge and seed funding to drive sustainability in four areas: agriculture and food systems, tourism and resilient communities, natural resources, and clean energy.
